Teaching Initiatives

The Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning Excellence is pleased to present the following teaching initiatives this year:

Upcoming Events and Programming:

TA Training and Professional Development Workshops

TA Training and Professional Development Workshops

The TA training program provides the opportunity for TAs to gain professional development training by attending five hours of workshops (two hours of Intro to TAing workshop and three additional one-hour workshops) and completing a reflection paper. All participants will receive a certificate of completion and a badge that can be uploaded to LinkedIn. The workshops are a worthwhile and fun experience for TAs and faculty. Last year 12 units were represented at the workshops.

New this year - The Office of the Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning Excellence will cover the cost for TAs to attend Intro to TAing with a workshop being offering for each faculty.

The Virtual Maple League Teaching and Learning Centre (V_MLTLC)

The Virtual Maple League Teaching and Learning Centre (V_MLTLC)

The Maple League universities are uniquely positioned to become leaders in undergraduate teaching and experiential learning in Canada and internationally. Connecting people from different disciplines and backgrounds — to create new communities and strengthen existing ones — is one of the foundational strengths of the Maple League.

The Virtual Maple League Teaching and Learning Centre (V_MLTLC) has been in development since 2018 and continues to curate and create professional development opportunities (e.g. workshops, book clubs, microcertificates, modules, brown bags, templates, quick tips, videos, etc.).

The course provides a place for new faculty to access important information throughout their first-year and to connect with other new faculty members through online activities. Faculty members can self-enroll in the course using the available link below.

SharePoint Resource on Student Surveys

SharePoint Resource on Student Surveys

The Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning Excellence and LTID have created a Sharepoint resource on student surveys. The site contains templates, how-to videos, links to information on student assessments of teaching effectiveness, and information on how to administer the survey at a departmental level.

Self-Directed Teaching Squares

Self-Directed Teaching Squares

Teaching Squares are designed to enhance conversations about teaching and learning, foster group discussion and community through reciprocal peer observation, and provide space to engage in a self-reflection practice aimed at achieving personal teaching goals. Teaching Squares address the issue of teaching being a private endeavor by creating opportunities for peer observation, reflection, and discussion. They contribute to a more collaborative teaching culture and elevate the status of teaching in academic contexts.
